In our everyday lives, it’s so easy to point fingers at other people. We quickly notice their mistakes, their flaws, and their hypocrisy. But when it comes to looking at ourselves, many of us go blind. We fail to examine our own sins and shortcomings, yet we’re quick to judge others for the same things.
Jesus addressed this common human weakness in the Bible:
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
(Matthew 7:3-5, NIV)
This powerful verse calls us to honest self-examination. True spiritual growth starts when we stop blaming others and begin looking inwards with humility and courage.
This self-examination prayer was written to help you do exactly that. It will guide you to face your own sins and hypocrisy honestly, open your heart to God’s mercy, and experience real transformation.
Prayer to Look Inwards
Heavenly Father,
In a world that is quick to point fingers and slow to examine its own heart, grant me the courage today to look inwards. Illuminate the hidden corners of my soul where pride, self-righteousness, and hypocrisy quietly dwell. Help me to see clearly my own sins, not with condemnation that crushes, but with the gentle light of Your mercy that leads to genuine repentance.
Lord, tear down the walls I’ve built to hide my shortcomings. Expose the times I’ve judged others harshly while excusing the same faults in myself. Forgive me for the masks I wear, the outward show of holiness while my inside is full of unresolved pain, bitterness, and inconsistency. Give me eyes that see truthfully, a heart that is humble, and lips that speak with honesty instead of pretense.
Teach me, O God, the difficult but freeing art of self-examination. Let Your Holy Spirit be my mirror, revealing every area where I have fallen short of Your glory. Replace my defensiveness with humility, my blame-shifting with personal responsibility, and my outward criticism with inward reflection.
When it hurts to face the truth about myself, remind me of Your unfailing love. Remind me that true change begins here, in the quiet honesty of my own heart. May this inward gaze not leave me in despair, but draw me closer to Your grace, where real transformation happens.
I surrender my ego, my justifications, and my blind spots to You. Make me a person who walks in integrity, quick to repent, slow to judge, and full of compassion, starting first with myself.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
