7 Practical Steps to Overcome Spiritual Dryness

What to Do When You Feel Spiritually Dry or Distant from God

We’ve all been there. One moment, your prayer life feels alive and vibrant, and the next, God seems far away. Your Bible gathers dust, worship feels mechanical, and your heart feels… empty. This experience is called spiritual dryness, and it’s more common than many Christians admit.
If you’re currently feeling distant from God, take heart. This season doesn’t mean you’ve lost your faith — it often means it’s time for a deeper reset.

Why Do We Experience Spiritual Dryness?

Spiritual dryness can sneak up for many reasons:
    – Busyness and distractions — Life gets loud, and quiet time with God gets pushed aside.
    – Unconfessed sin or hidden struggles that create distance.
    – Seasons of testing or waiting that stretch our faith.
    – Spiritual attack or simply emotional and physical exhaustion.
The good news? God is not distant from you — even when you feel distant from Him. He invites you back with open arms (James 4:8).

7 Practical Steps to Overcome Spiritual Dryness

    1. Acknowledge It Honestly
Don’t pretend everything is fine. Tell God exactly how you feel. King David did this repeatedly in the Psalms.
    > “Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God…” (Psalm 42:11)
    2. Return to the Basics
Start small. Even 10 minutes a day reading Scripture and praying can reignite your spirit. Don’t aim for perfection — aim for consistency.
    3. Confess and Repent
Ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart. Is there anything blocking intimacy? Confession brings fresh cleansing and closeness (1 John 1:9).
    4. Worship Through the Dryness
Worship isn’t just a feeling — it’s a choice. Put on worship music, sing (even if it feels flat at first), and watch your spirit respond.
    5. Surround Yourself with Community
Isolation makes dryness worse. Share with trusted Christian friends, join a Bible study, or talk to your pastor. Sometimes God speaks through His people.
    6. Remember God’s Faithfulness
Look back at past seasons when God came through. Journal His past victories. Faith grows when we recall His track record.
    7. Rest in Grace, Not Performance
God’s love for you isn’t based on how “spiritual” you feel. Rest in His grace. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simply sit in His presence and say, “Lord, I’m here.”

A Simple Prayer for Spiritual Refreshment

“Father, I feel dry and distant. Draw me close to You again. Refresh my spirit, renew my passion, and help me hear Your voice. I choose to trust You even now. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
You don’t have to stay in this dry season. Many great men and women of faith walked through similar valleys and came out stronger. God is using this time to draw you closer,  not push you away.
If you’re in a dry place right now, leave a comment below: “I’m trusting God to refresh me.” You’re not alone.
