Prayer for a Forgiving Heart

Forgiveness can be one of the hardest things we face, yet it is also one of the most freeing. If you’re carrying the weight of hurt, anger, or betrayal, this prayer for a forgiving heart will help you release the pain and walk in the peace that only God can give.

Why We Need a Forgiving Heart

Holding onto unforgiveness keeps us trapped in bitterness and blocks the joy God wants for us. A forgiving heart brings healing, restores relationships, and allows us to reflect the love of Christ. It is not about excusing wrong or forgetting the pain — it is about choosing freedom and trusting God with the outcome.
Jesus Christ, Our Perfect Example of Forgiveness
When Jesus was nailed to the cross by the very people He came to save, He looked at them with compassion and prayed:
“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”(Luke 23:34)
Even in His greatest suffering, Jesus chose forgiveness. If our Savior could forgive those who killed Him, we too can ask God for the grace to forgive those who have hurt us.

How Many Times Should We Forgive?

The Bible gives us clear guidance. When Peter asked Jesus how often he should forgive his brother who sins against him  “Up to seven times?” Jesus answered:
I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.” (Matthew 18:21-22)
This teaches us that forgiveness is not a one-time act but a lifestyle of grace and mercy, just as God continually shows us mercy every day.

A Prayer for a Forgiving Heart

    Heavenly Father,
In the quiet moments of our hearts, we come before You seeking the grace to forgive as You have forgiven us. Teach us to release the burdens of resentment, anger, and pain that weigh us down. Help us embrace a forgiving heart that brings peace to our souls and reflects Your perfect love.
Lord, You know how difficult forgiveness can be. When others hurt us deeply through words, actions, or betrayal, our natural response is often to hold on to the pain. Yet a forgiving heart is the path to true freedom. It lifts the heavy chains of bitterness, restores joy, and opens the door to healing and stronger relationships.
Thank You for the example of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Even as He hung on the cross, He prayed for those who crucified Him. Give us that same compassionate heart. Soften our hearts today. Replace our hurt with Your peace, our anger with Your love, and our pride with humility.
Help us to forgive not just seven times, but seventy times seven. May our lives mirror the forgiving heart of Christ and draw others closer to You.
We thank You for the gift of forgiveness and the freedom it brings. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray.
    Amen.
