SCRIPTURE: “But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:” – Philippians 2:7

In our Fire Scriptures today, in the John’s Gospel, the scripture is a sample one but highly profound. What it means are far reaching and enduring. It is a scripture that shows that Jesus had a task to fulfil. The barbaric execution that Jesus suffered is summed up in these three words: “It Is Finished.” Philippians 2:8 has this to say “And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”

Without gainsaying the fact, the ability to say, “It is finished” to the commission of the Father was not the beginning of some kind of “glory road” but the end. It was the climax of a life of obedience, humility, hardship, and suffering that now ushers in a new era for all the citizen on earth that will accept His sacrifice on the cross. “It is finished” announces the full obedience of the One who, through equal with God, made Himself nothing.

Dearly beloved, what this means or what I see is that “we are to live lives of purpose,” Unless Jesus had a purpose, a mission and an assignment to complete, the words “It is finished” would had no meaning or very little meaning. He was not saying that His earthly life was finished. In fact, His life had no beginning and has no end, rather He was speaking of what His Father had instructed Him to do.

What did the Father ask Him to do? To die for man, so that man can be reconciled back to God from his fallen state, He was saying that mission accomplished, completed, concluded. Beloved, you too have some divine assignments. Are you committed to fulfilling them as Jesus was to His own? Will you be able to say to God, like Jesus, “It is Finished” or have you abandoned your divine assignments? Jesus finished successfully the work of redemption that the father gave Him: He conquered sin, satan and the world. He saved mankind from eternal damnation and made the sons of men to become sons of God. Hallelujah!
