Rev. Jesse Jackson (1941–2026): Remembering a Life of Faith, Justice, and Hope

The Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson Sr., a towering figure in the American civil rights movement and a lifelong advocate for justice and equality, has died at the age of 84. Jackson passed away on February 17, 2026, after a long illness related to complications from Parkinson’s disease and a respiratory condition that had affected his health in recent years.

Today, we honor his memory and reflect on a life that inspired millions around the world.

Born Jesse Louis Burns on October 8, 1941, in Greenville, South Carolina, Jackson grew up in a segregated society where racial injustice was woven into everyday life. His mother, Matilda (née Burns) Jackson, was a devout Christian who instilled in him a strong faith, while his father, Jesse Jackson Sr., worked hard to support his family despite economic challenges.

Raised with deep spiritual roots, Jackson’s faith became the foundation for his lifelong dedication to activism and social change.

In the early 1960s, Jackson became involved in the civil rights movement and worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He participated in historic protests, including the Selma to Montgomery marches, and was present during pivotal moments that helped transform America. Through nonviolent action, he fought to break down barriers of segregation and inequality.

Jackson’s leadership and courage were shaped not just by his convictions, but by his deep faith — a faith that sustained him through the challenges of advocating for justice in a divided nation.

After the assassination of Dr. King in 1968, Jackson continued the work of the movement and emerged as one of its most prominent leaders. He founded Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity) in 1971, an organization focused on economic empowerment, civil rights, and community development. Later, Operation PUSH merged with the National Rainbow Coalition, forming the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition — a cornerstone of Jackson’s advocacy work.

Under his leadership, the coalition championed fair employment practices, expanded educational opportunities, and pushed for political and economic equity.

Jackson made history with his presidential runs in 1984 and 1988, becoming one of the first African American candidates to compete for a major party’s nomination. Though he did not secure the nomination, his campaigns energized millions of voters nationwide and expanded access and representation within American politics.

His influence reached beyond electoral politics — leaders on both sides of the political spectrum recognized his role in shaping discussions about civil rights, economic justice, and social inclusion.

Rev. Jesse Jackson married Jacqueline Lavinia Brown in July 1962, and together they raised five children:

Jackson’s children and grandchildren have continued aspects of his work in public service, ministry, and community outreach.

Jackson’s family described him as a devoted husband, proud father, and loving grandfather whose faith guided not only his public work but his personal life as well.

Even as his health declined, Jackson remained committed to the causes he championed throughout his life. Though Parkinson’s disease and related health complications eventually took him from this world, his spirit, conviction, and commitment to justice will endure.
